Tea Estates

The geographical location of this plantation is at 94°. Longitude and 24.5° Latitude. To its North abound the mighty Himalayas which offer a panoramic view from Borsapori. To its North also flows the mighty river Bhramaputra, once considered the lifeline of the state of Assam. To its south lie the Karbi hills which are inhabited by Karbi tribal’s who still live a tribal way of life. To its east lies river Dhunseri which is a tributary of river Bhramaputra. To its west lies a world heritage site, the Kaziranga Wild Life Sanctuary famed for its one homed rhinoceros.

Borsapori Tea Estate lies huddled in the lap of nature and there could not be a better place to grow tea.
Borsapori is an amalgamation of two words of the local language. Bor- meaning big and Sapori — meaning grassland. Borsapori in the local language means Big Grassland. It has 700 hectares approximately under tea and produces approximately 1.5 million kgs of teas annually.

The Tea Estate was opened out originally by Mr.Thomas Elliot in the year 1879. It was then acquired by Miss M.A. Kelly who died on April 5, 1900. The trustees under her will, sold the estate to Borsapori Tea Co. in January 1903.
Borsapori Tea Estate was taken over by Jorehaut Tea Company in the year 1921. The Tea Estate is famed for making high quality CTC and ORTHODOX teas, bulk of whose produce during the quality period is exported to Overseas Destinations.

Borsapori Tea Estate

There are several gardens in Assam which have taken their names from the sites in their neighbourhood, where battles were fought during the time of ‘AHOM’ dynasty. Numalighur is one of them, which has definite monuments of this former civilization. Sometime during the various conflicts between the AHOM and KACHARI Kings, the KACHARIS were defeated and AHOM King took princess ‘NUMALI’, a KACHARI princess as captive. He built a ‘GHUK (FORT) and resided there with her for sometime. This King, however, abandoned princess ‘NUMALI’ and eventually returned to his own capital. Aggrieved at her desertion, the princess committed suicide by drowning herself in the adjoining marshes of BEHORA.

Records say, 12 acres of tea was planted in 1852-53, 22 acres in 1855, 34 acres in 1856 and 150 acres in 1857. The estate was purchased by Jorehaut Tea Company in 1859 for a sum of £ 18,000.

Today, it is one of the largest estates in this area. Most of the original planting done at NUMALIGHUR during the British Indian days have been replanted with scientifically developed better quality seeds as vegetatively grown clonal plants that has helped Numalighur achieve a quality of black tea which is considered one of the top quality products of the country.

Numalighur Tea Estate

Rungagora is mentioned in the history of Assam in 1834 as the capital of Nowgaon. In local language. Rungagora literally means red soil.

The garden is situated on one side of Assam Trunk Road, which is National Highway No.37 and Gheela Bheel, a tributary of Bhramaputra River, on the other side.
First eight acres were planted in 1862 as an extension of Numalighur Tea Estate. Later in 1869. Rungagora was made a separate division and a new tea house was constructed. New tea house was constructed during the same year and hand made tea of around 300 maunds was manufactured. Extension work carried on and by the year 1945, 602 acres were brought under tea with a total grant area of 1621 acres.

Today, it is one of the most renowned quality gardens of Assam producing both CTC and Orthodox teas of highest quality round the years. It also has a dubious distinction of higher yielding garden of the district.

Rungagora ‘J’ Tea Estate

LANGHORI was name of a small river and ‘JAN’ in local language means small stream . The British planters could pronounce LANGHORIJAN, as a result slowly it came to be known as LANGHARJAN. Langharjan is located on the wide corridor between Dibrugarh and Tinsukia and both sides of this corridor lies the best tea growing areas over the ground and oil and coal deposits below.

The land on which Langharjan was placed by was discovered by
Mr. George Ross Grant, who in 1909 was extracting timber from the forest in the neighbourhood. It was only until end of 1912 when 460 acres were planted. It was reported in 1913 that a lot of planted area was a failure and only 295 acres of planted area was of satisfactory quality. The following year a tea house was erected. In 1921, the garden came under the aegis of Jorehaut Tea Company.

Mr. Cyril Gore had taken charge of Langharjan from Mr.George Ross Grant as Manager in 1912 and remained in charge till his retirement in 1946. It was Mr. Gore who was responsible for making Langharjan a very fine garden and the most profitable division of The Jorehaut Tea Company. Today, it is one of the highest yielding gardens of Assam making golden orthodox teas which are liked by importers all over the world.
